Cozy Up with These Fall Reads: My Top Picks for Autumn

As the leaves start to change and the nights grow longer, it’s the perfect time to curl up with a good book. Whether you’re looking for a little magic, mystery, or a spine-tingling adventure, these books are sure to set the tone for a cozy fall. Here are some of my favorite fall reads, plus a few I’m planning to dive into this season.

Books I’m Looking Forward to Reading

1. Haunt Sweet Home by Sarah Pinsker

A chilling mystery with a dash of humor, Haunt Sweet Home promises to blend the eerie atmosphere of haunted houses with complex character dynamics. I can’t wait to get lost in this ghostly, twisty tale!

2. What Time the Sexton’s Spade Doth Rust by Alan Bradley

Bradley never disappoints! This upcoming read has poisonous mushrooms, “pestilent” younger cousins and long-buried secrets that refuse to stay hidden.

3. Night Magic: Adventures Among Glowworms, Moon Gardens and Other Marvels of the Dark, by Leigh Ann Henlon

If you’re craving a non-fiction read that celebrates all the things that go on in the dark, this is the book for you!

4. Salt and Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher

Witchy vibes, sweeping romance, and windswept landscapes—Salt and Broom has all the ingredients for a perfect fall read. I’m eager to see how this Jane Eyre retelling measures up to the original.

Books I’ve Read and Loved

1. A Talent for Murder by Peter Swanson

Nothing says fall like a good thriller! Swanson weaves a tale of intrigue, where every character seems to be hiding something. This one kept me on the edge of my seat with twists I didn’t see coming. And, of course, I’m always partial to a book with a librarian protagonist 😉

2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

A true classic when it comes to dark academia. Tartt’s lush prose and complex characters pull you into a world where intellect and deceit collide. This one is a must-read if you enjoy slow-burn mysteries with depth, and it’s perfect on cool, fall days!

3. Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

Allen has long been a favorite of mine because of her way of blending the magical with the everyday, and Other Birds is no exception. It’s a beautiful, heartwarming story about finding connections in unexpected places—a perfect reminder to embrace the magic of life, especially during the cozy fall season.

4. Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

No fall reading list would be complete without Practical Magic! This bewitching tale of family, magic, and love will sweep you off your feet. The atmospheric setting and rich storytelling make it a perennial favorite.

Whether you’re in the mood for witchy vibes, thrilling mysteries, or a touch of magic, these books will make your autumn reading experience unforgettable. If you’d like to see if these books are available at your local library, try searching Worldcat (or better yet, contact your local librarian!)
